The Electrical Power Engineering (EPE) group at the University of Southampton hosted its annual Research Away Day on Thursday, April 3rd 2025 at the Best Western Chilworth Manor Hotel. The event was structured as a small conference and included a diverse array of presentations and posters which encapsulated the work of the EPE group.

The research of the EPE group covers a wide spectrum of topics which were all represented at the event. Presentations began by addressing contemporary challenges and future directions in the integration of solar energy into electrical grids, DC switching devices, dielectric materials for sustainable power transmission and novel approaches in electrified aircraft propulsion.

Later, members presented data-driven control strategies for power systems, approaches for assessing the conditions of cables and the Integrated Management System which is being implemented within the group to enhance research quality, operational efficiency and compliance with modern standards. Posters covering an equally vast range of topics were displayed throughout the event which were created by members of the EPE group.

The concluding presentation sessions particularly emphasised the diversity of the research being undertaken by the group. In particular, the adoption of machine-learning approaches was introduced by presentations on spatiotemporal temperature forecasting and anxiety detection in adolescents. State-estimation of power systems using Kalman filters, evaluation of 3D-printed materials for high-voltage applications and the characterisation of a dry cathode neutraliser were topics that were also presented and thoroughly enjoyed by participants.

The EPE Research Away Day 2025 embodied the group's collaborative ethos and commitment to pioneering research. The event served as an excellent platform for sharing the latest developments, fostering new research collaborations, and setting the stage for continued innovation in electrical power engineering.

We look forward to the EPE Research Away Day 2026!
